چکیده

The future evolution of the universe suggested by the cosmological model proposed earlier at this meeting by the authors is explored. The fundamental role played by the positive “cosmological constant” is emphasized. Dyson’s 1979 paper entitled Time Without End is briefly reviewed. His most optimistic scenario requires that the universe be geometrically open and that biology is structural in the sense that the current complexity of human society can be reproduced by scaling up its (quantum mechanical) structure to arbitrary size. If the recently measured “cosmological constant” is indeed a fundamental constant of nature, then Dyson’s scenario is, for various reasons, ruled out by the finite (De Sitter) horizon due to exponential expansion of the resulting space. However, the finite temperature of that horizon does open other interesting options. If, as is suggested by the cosmology under consideration, the current exponential expansion of the universe is due to a phase transition which fixes a physical boundary condition during the early radiation dominated era, the behavior of the universe after the relevant scale factor crosses the De Sitter radius opens up still other possibilities. The relevance of Martin Rees’ apocalyptic eschatology recently presented in his book Our Final Hour is mentioned. It is concluded that even for Work supported in part by Department of Energy contract DE–AC03–76SF00515. A preliminary version of this paper was presented at The Twenty-Sixth Annual Meeting of the ALTERNATIVE NATURAL PHILOSOPHY ASSOCIATION Cambridge, England, 31 July 5 August, 2004

Transimmanence and the Im/possible Relationship between Eschatology and Transcendence

Although we live in a post-metaphysical age, there is a renewed interest in transcendence, especially at the intersection of philosophy, religion, and theology. There are several reasons for this: among others, the important link that the future (eschatology) has with the unknown or that which lies beyond (transcendence). In this article, this relation between eschatology and transcendence is e...

Trinitarian Telos: Tracing Some Theological Links from God’s Triunity to Christian Eschatology

Drawing on the work of Peter Leithart and Robert Jenson, this article demonstrates that Christian eschatology is inescapably founded on the doctrine of God’s triunity. The basis for many of the “systems” used by Christian eschatology is found antecedently within the triunity of God’s being. The divine activity within the economy by which creation is being directed towards its glorious climax is...

Recovering Origen’s Pauline Exegesis: Exegesis and Eschatology in the Commentary on Ephesians

Origen’s Commentary on Ephesians is preserved only in fragments excerpted in a Byzantine catena, which are inadequate for reconstructing Origen’s interpretation of this letter. This article investigates the possibility that a commentary on the same text by Jerome preserves the interplay in Origen’s commentary between the investigation of specific exegetical problems and the interpretation of th...
